Welcome to my new site

Thank you for visiting my personal website.

I mainly write about programming, tech and document things for my future self. You can learn a bit more about me here.

This site used to run on a self-hosted WordPress and I had many attempts of moving to a static site generator over the past couple of years. I got tired of the constant maintenance, upkeep and fighting attackers and spam. Not to even mention all the services that automattic keeps on trying to sell to you to deal with these issues. Don’t get me wrong, WordPress is an amazing product and is still one of the best blogging software out there.

I have used Hugo for a few years to power a couple of other sites. However the biggest issue that I have experienced with Hugo is that if you don’t constantly keep the software up to date on your machine then eventually one day you will find out that the latest version (after a format re-install or a new machine) have changed so much that you now face rewriting your theme etc. just so that you can eventually get back to trying to write a post. Hugo is amazing, super fast and written in Go. In fact it was Hugo that originally introduced me to Go back in 2016 and since it has become my favourite programming language of choice.

My preference has always been to develop my own site or theme and put my own stamp on it. I just simply don’t have the time nor appetite for it any more. I would rather spend that time with my kids or working on actual projects.

While I was exploring Ruby on Rails … which I can’t believe I have been sleeping on this amazing tech all these years, for what? to be smug about my tech stack instead of just shipping … I digress and will post about it another day. I came across this excellent talk by Radan Skorić about Hotwire and thus discovered his personal website. To no surprise it is running on Jekyll and uses this amazing theme called Chirpy.

I now just want to have a static site generator and spend as little time developing the site/theme and maintaining it. This led to me giving Chirpy and Jekyll a try and you know what? I love it! So this site is now using both for the foreseeable future.
